Getting Around Da Lat: Grab, Scooter or Tour (and Getting Back)

A group of Mooka's Home guests with their Easy Rider motorbikes outside the hostel in Da Lat

In short

In the centre of Da Lat, walk or take a Grab: cars and bikes both work well, and the lake, the market and the night market are 15–20 minutes on foot from Mooka's Home. Outside town (the waterfalls, Mario Kart, Lang Biang, the coffee farms) Grab is patchy, and a driver who drops you off will usually not wait, so getting back is the hard part. Ride a scooter only if you are a confident rider with a licence (150,000 VND a day at the hostel, back by 22:00); otherwise a tour with hostel pickup or an Easy Rider is the simpler way out of town. Updated November 2026.

The short answer: what to use for each trip

A guest asked us recently: "We heard that the cars do not wait at the location and it can be hard to find a way back, is this true?" Yes, for anywhere outside the city. A Grab driver drops you and takes the next job; in the countryside there may be no other driver for kilometres. The rest of this page is how to plan around that.

In town: walk, then Grab

Mooka's Home is about 2 km from the centre: 15 minutes on foot to Xuan Huong Lake, about 20 minutes to the night market (5 minutes by Grab). The Da Lat Market, the lake, the cathedral and the Crazy House are all close together, so most people walk the centre and take a Grab for the uphill legs or the ride home after dinner.

  • Grab works well in town, both GrabCar and GrabBike (motorbike taxi). Use it for the bus station, the airport and anywhere in the city.
  • Show our address in Vietnamese if the pin lands in the wrong lane: 02 Cổ Loa, Phường Xuân Hương, Đà Lạt. Drivers find it from that.
  • Da Lat is hilly and cold at night. A walk that looks short on the map is often uphill; at 22:00 in November, with nights around 12°C (Da Lat weather), a 5-minute Grab is the better choice.
  • Taxi: reception (open 07:30–22:00) can call a trusted one.

Out of town: why getting back is the problem

The sights that make Da Lat worth three days are outside it: the waterfalls, the Mario Kart track and Mongo Land, the coffee farms around Nam Ban, Lang Biang. Getting there by Grab is usually possible. Getting back is not guaranteed: the app may search for a long time and find nobody, especially late in the afternoon, in the rain, or when you are 30 km out at Elephant Falls.

  • Agree the return before you go. If you take a car out, ask the driver to wait or come back at a set time, and settle the price for both ways before you get in.
  • Book the ride back early. Open the app 20–30 minutes before you want to leave, not at the gate at closing time.
  • Group up. Reception can put you in a shared car with other guests going the same way, which also splits the cost.
  • Keep the hostel's WhatsApp handy: if you get stuck, message us and we will help you find a way back.

💡 Local tip: Pongour, the biggest waterfall, is about 45–50 km south. Do not try it by Grab: go with the car or tour that brings you back. The Da Lat waterfalls guide has the distance and the season for each fall.

Renting a scooter: when it is the right call

A scooter solves the way-back problem and gives you the most freedom: you stop where you like and leave when you want. At Mooka's Home it costs 150,000 VND a day. Three rules come with it:

  • Back by 22:00 the same day, not 24 hours. Reception closes at 22:00.
  • A motorbike licence is required to rent one from us.
  • Da Lat's hill roads are not for beginners. Steep, winding passes, cold mornings and wet roads after rain. If you have never ridden a scooter, do not learn here.

If you do ride, the countryside loop (flower village, Mario Kart, Mongo Land, a coffee farm, Elephant Falls and Linh An Pagoda) is about 65 km round trip; start by 08:00 so you are back before dark. Wear the warmest layer you have: it is cold at speed in the morning.

No licence, or not confident? Ride pillion or take a tour

On an Easy Rider tour the guide does the riding: you get the scooter freedom without the hill roads.

Every tour we book picks you up at the hostel and brings you back, so there is no way-back question at all. These are the ones that cover the places that are hard to reach on your own (prices as of November 2026):

Which one should you pick?

  • One or two days, mostly the centre: walk and Grab. You do not need a scooter.
  • You ride confidently and have a licence: rent a scooter for the countryside day, Grab for the evenings.
  • No licence, never ridden, or it is raining: an Easy Rider for freedom, a minivan tour for the waterfalls and Mario Kart.
  • Sunrise, Pongour or Elephant Falls: a tour or a car for the day, never a one-way Grab.

Planning the days themselves? The Da Lat itinerary shows how to fit the centre, a countryside day and a tour into two or three days.

Where next

Stay with us and ask reception in the morning: scooter, tour or a shared car, we sort it before you leave the house.
